For many, the world of sports journalism can be tough to crack. To succeed, there are several key traits you’ll need to master. In no particular order:

1. Resilience

There will be plenty of knocks along your journey – from finding an ‘in’ to the industry to all the many ups-and-downs you will go through when you actually find a home

2. The ability to write good copy

Sounds obvious, but it’s not. You can teach people a lot in sports journalism, but if you can’t do the basics then you haven’t got a prayer

3. Knowledge of your subject matter

To stand out from the crowd you will need to know more about your subject of expertise than most everyone else. Do your homework, go to school on your subject. Live it, breath it. Everything you do should be geared towards acquiring more knowledge. Knowledge is power.

4. Creativity

You can write, and you know your subject area, but are you creative enough – can you see the story? Do you have great headline management skills?

5. Flexibility

You will need to often work unsocialable hours, and be called up to cover breaking news and post event coverage. This isn’t a 9-5, Monday – Friday job.

6. A Great Attitude and the Ability to Learn New Things

Online journalism is a moving feast – the best practice landscape is always changing. You will be a quick study, and enjoy and embrace change.

7. A Collegial Approach

It’s not all about you. You will be part of a team – you will need to play your part. Sometimes you will take one.

8. The Ability To Multi-task

Your day won’t go in a straight line. You will be able to deal with changing and conflicting priorities and operate in a fast paced environment. You will have to do more than just survive.

9. A Strong Work Ethic and a Competitive Nature

You will always be on the top of your game, embrace fresh challenges and be very, very competitive. You will want to be first to everything. You will have a strong desire to succeed. Failure will not be an option.

Many will call, but few are chosen. Make sure you are in the mix – and stay there!
